The fishing village of Salinas, on the country’s southwest region, is an excellent option for a one-day visit for those visiting of living in the capital city of Santo Domingo.
Salinas is situated about an hour west of Santo Domingo, near the southwest city of Bani.
The fishing village stands just a few kilometers from the region’s most important naval base. Once off the road, visitors will see the outstanding dunes of the region.
In order to visit the dunes visitors must purchase a ticket at the Visitor’s Reception Center because “Las Dunas,” as they are called, are now a protected area rich in local wildlife such as iguanas and a wide variety of birds.
Visitors are advised that they must wear protective clothing and sufficient sunscreen in order to visit the area. Although walking through the dunes will require some effort, it is certainly worth it due to the beauty of the region.
After passing the fishing village of Salinas, visitors will marvel at two of the region’s most beautiful beaches, perfect for kite surfing, scuba diving or snorkeling.
The region is spotted with old wooden buildings that were once used as warehouses by the local salt mines.
Fresh food abounds in the area, so a nice lunch at the beach will be more than worthwhile.
